Dr. Zawie and PicklesDr. Stephen Zawie (pronounced Zay-wee) is a Long Island native. His passion for veterinary medicine began by spending time at his father’s veterinary clinic from a young age. He left his home in Stony Brook to pursue his bachelor’s degree at The University of Maryland, College Park where he majored in Animal Science. He spent the next three years at Ross University in St. Kitts and finished his veterinary education at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

Dr. Zawie was in Baton Rouge during Hurricane Katrina and like many of his colleagues, participated in the rescue and rehabilitation of the animals affected by the storm. One of those animals was badly injured and suffering from dehydration. After making a full recovery, “Pickles’ ‘ quickly became a member of Dr. Zawie’s family. He is currently living in Island Park, New York, with his wife, 2 sons, 2 frenchies, and 1 hairless cat!

After veterinary school Dr. Zawie was accepted into one of the most prestigious and grueling internship programs at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan. It was during this time that he honed his medical and surgical skills. He spent the next few years as an associate Veterinarian at progressive veterinary hospitals in Manhattan & Bayridge, Brooklyn, before deciding to open his own practice in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, in 2012.  He opened his second location, Greenwood Veterinary Care in Greenwood Heights, Brooklyn in 2018.

Dr. Zawie has decided to bring his practice to the Island. The location will be in Long Beach, New York. He will open his state of the art animal hospital, Beach Veterinary Care, in early 2024.

Our Staff

Tara Tara Whaley
Hospital Manager

My name is Tara, and I am the practice manager for BVC. I am a Long Island native, currently residing in Island Park. I am a cat mama; I have an orange and white Maine coon and a black and white short hair.

During college, I worked as the front-end office manager for a small vet practice. I went to college to be a teacher and taught preschool for a few years until I had children. For the last 8 years, I was fortunate to stay home and raise my children. Also during that time, I was working as an Independent Consultant for a direct sales company with a team of 15+ consultants under me. When I am not at work, I enjoy beach days, reading and serial killer documentaries.

I take pride in customer service, and I look forward to seeing you and your pets in our clinic.

Kathryn CreightonKathryn Creighton
Veterinary Technician

My name is Kathryn, you can call me Kat though! I’ve been in veterinary medicine for about 10 years working my way up from kennel tech, to assistant, all the way to Veterinary Nurse. My background is predominantly in Emergency, but that doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten my roots in GP!

Outside of work I’m a mother of 2 beautiful girls, big fitness girl, and live my life enjoying training my retired Explosive Detection K9 Doni! I like to believe his retirement is what drew me back to vet med in all honesty.

With that being said, I couldn’t be more thrilled to start my new adventure as Lead Nurse alongside Dr. Zawie and his wonderful team at Beach Veterinary Care. And I look forward to meeting you all!

Veterinary Technician

Hello pawrents! My name is Madison and I grew up in Brooklyn. I am an only child besides having a fur sister named Maxie for 16 years. I always had a special love for animals but really found happiness in the veterinary field about 5 years ago. During college I worked with homeland security training their K-9 units. After college I began working in emergency and specialty medicine. I started out as an assistant and worked my way up to technician before joining the team. When I’m not helping your furry friends, I am traveling, baking and spending time with family.

Steven RobertSteven Robert
Veterinary Technician Assistant

I’ve been in veterinary care for 8 years. I worked in animal hospitals and animal shelters.

I was born in the island of Puerto Rico. Since I was a little kid i was always surrounded by animals and nature. We used to have all different types of animals from farm animals, exotics ,and domestic. I honestly don’t remember never having an animals with me. At all time I either had a baby iguana on my shoulder or a snake. This is why I went in veterinary care because of the love I have for them, I wanted to help them out and make a difference.
